It lets a person know that company X is talking to them. It starts the process of telling the consumer who the company is and what it stands for. But, it can not do it alone. The logo combines with the identity's 'kit of parts' to tell the whole story. If a logo grows with its company, years later it will have equity. This leads to a periodical updating of the logo which aims to feel modern and maintain the original spirit of the mark.
